Advanced technology - Your doctor highly recommends you have an Optomap® Retinal Exam, as part of your annual comprehensive eye exam.  The Optomap generates an instantaneous, ultra-wide digital scan of your retina, assisting your doctor in detecting any signs of eye disease. The Optomap is fast and comfortable for patients of all ages. The test takes only minutes to perform, capturing a 200 degree view of your retina in only a quarter of a second. The Optomap is especially helpful to your doctor because it provides a permanent baseline record of the condition of your retina for comparison during your future eye exams.

History of Optomap - The Optomap technology was invented by Douglas Anderson, whose then
5-year-old son, Leif, lost sight in one eye due to a retinal problem that went undetected. Although Leif was having regular eye exams, conventional tests are uncomfortable, especially for small children, making it difficult for the doctor to conduct a thorough examination. Douglas designed the Optomap Retinal Exam to make retinal exams easier for both patients and doctors and to help others avoid the unnecessary vision loss experienced by his son.

Become better informed
- The Optomap Retinal Exam is a valuable tool your doctor can use to educate you about your health and wellness. It provides you and your doctor with an opportunity to interactively review and discuss the results of your examination. Your doctor will educate you on the various structures of your retina and explain treatment options for any conditions revealed by the exam. The more knowledgeable you are, the easier
it is to understand and follow your doctor’s recommendations for treatment and prevention.

A comprehensive eye exam, including a thorough retinal exam, can detect early signs of numerous diseases that affect not only your eyes and your sight, but other areas of your body as well. The Optomap Retinal Exam helps your doctor identify abnormalities that could indicate the onset of a number of diseases that often present first in the retina. In these instances, individuals typically do not experience any pain or other symptoms.  These diseases include diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, hypertension (high blood pressure), retinal detachments, glaucoma and even some cancers. This quick and painless exam is complementary to dilation and helps your doctor instantly record a great deal of information that helps protect both your overall and eye health.
